Every life has a story worth preserving.
The Founding Story
The idea for Guiding Forward had been with me for years, but it became real when I came across an old video of my grandad.
In it, he was holding my first child on his knee, talking to the baby and sharing one of his stories. It was a simple family moment—the kind that might not have seemed especially important when it was recorded.
By the time I found the video again, I had three children. Two of them never had the chance to meet their great-grandad.
Watching it, I realized how much more I wished we had captured: his stories, his values, the lessons life had taught him, and the things he would want future generations of our family to know. Not only memories of him, but his voice, his character, and the wisdom he carried.
Other experiences made the need feel even more urgent.
Over the years, I have lost several friends unexpectedly. Two of them were fathers with young children. Their families were left with tremendous grief, but also with confusion—their wives suddenly trying to make sense of important details and decisions while carrying an unimaginable loss.
More recently, a friend’s father passed away after living with dementia. He was in his late seventies, and his passing was not entirely unexpected. Still, what my friend said stayed with me:
“It’s strange that I’ll never see him again.”
That simple sentence captures something profound. No matter how old someone is, or how much time we believe we have had, their absence is difficult to comprehend. We often do not realize how much of a person lives in their voice, their expressions, their stories, and the small things only they could tell us—until those things are no longer within reach.
These experiences left me thinking about what families need before that moment arrives.
They need a way to preserve the person behind the memories: their stories, values, wisdom, and voice. They also need a way to leave practical guidance, so the people they love are not left searching for answers during one of the hardest periods of their lives.
That is the experience behind Guiding Forward.
It was created to help people preserve what matters, bring clarity to what comes next, and continue guiding the people they love—even when they can no longer be there in person.
